In late 2013, reports began to surface of United Nations peacekeepers as well as international forces sexually abusing youths as young as nine in war-torn Central African Republic. Since the start of the mission in 2013, the UN has recorded over 100 confirmed allegations of sexual abuse and rape countrywide by its own peacekeepers; most are underage girls. More accusations are being investigated and many believe the number of victims is much higher.  

During the height of the war, food and money were scarce, and those who were tasked in protecting the civilians abused the most vulnerable, by force or by promising money and food for sex at a time when aid failed to reach those in most need. If reports are made, many are lost or mishandled within the vast bureaucratic system that is failing this central African country.
